I do NOT own a Zapp, but I was thinking of purchasing one as an alternative to an umbrella stroller due to the limiting dimensions of my trunk. If you live in the suburbs, like I do, you know it can be hard to actually get your hands on one of these strollers to see if it has all the features you'd like. Today I got to spend an hour with a Zapp and here's what I discovered:

*This stroller weighs 18 lbs. (I had seen it listed at 13 lbs, but maybe that's the three wheel version? I weighed the 2010 Quinny Zapp 4 and it and it's definitely 18 lbs. with wheels, but without canopy.)

*The widest point at the base of the stroller is 23 inches. Wider than I'd wanted, but I think the amazing handling would go a long way towards navigating those closely spaced sale racks at Target.

*Seat to floor measurement is apx. 17 in.

*Wheels are each 6 in.

*Wheels are rubber coated, not noisy hard plastic as I'd read before. Maybe they changed the wheels for 2010?

*Folded, this stroller is compact. But, it does not fit into a locker at my gym.

*I found this stroller bulky to carry. I can't imagine hauling it around the zoo should my daughter opt to walk.

*The seat fabric zips right out of the frame. Although the manufacturer warns that machine washing might weaken the seams, it could technically be thrown in the washer if you choose.

*The Zapp does not lock in a folded position. Also, it has no strap or handle. So, you really need to use the bag to carry it.

*The Zapp does not have a standing fold in or out of the bag.

*Footrest is not adjustable.

*This stroller has linked brakes. A "brake" button on one side and a "brake off" button on the other.

*This stroller uses very little foot action for folding. And as you don't need to pull up on a brake lever with your foot, I consider this stroller pedicure friendly. :)

Also, I can't speak for Quinny's customer service post-purchase, but Melissa (a Quinny rep who took my call at Dorel) was amazingly helpful pre-purchase! She actually fetched her Zapp from the car to take some measurements for me when I was concerned that I might not be able to see one in person.

Happy shopping, everyone!

 "Works Well, Looks Great" 2010-03-28
By MagsOK (Oklahoma City)
This stroller functions well. We like how lightweight it is, yet how solid the construction. It rolls and functions well. It is a breeze to push, even with one hand. It fits perfectly in the trunk. It was confusing when we first started using it, but after reading the instructions this quickly became a breeze to fold.

The tipping problem isn't serious--just don't hang anything from the handles. The problem is not when he's in the seat, it's once you get him out of the seat the balance goes away and it's wheel's up pretty quick. But there's a storage bin underneath the seat that's average size. We don't carry a lot of stuff with us so this isn't an issue.

The one thing I wish this did was recline. There is no reclining option. But my child loves how comfortable the seat is. When we have it unfolded in the house, he's constantly going over and sitting in it and laughs.

We haven't had any problems on flights. We never take our strollers onto the plane anyway. We always complain of those parents who do because any stroller takes up too much room on a plane. Not to mention we just chuckle when they ram their kids into the seats and knees of other passengers as they make way down the super narrow isles. I don't want to stand behind a parent in the isle of a plane while I wait for them to get the kid out, placed into a seat, get all the bag out and up in the bin, then finally fold the stroller and spend a couple minutes trying to force it into a bin. Check it at the door of the plane and carry your kid the 100 or so feet to your seat. Come on, folks.

No matter where you are, folks notice the Quinny's bold color, and cool and unique design.

We like ours and are happy with the $190 we spent.

"just not practical, AT ALL." 2010-03-25
By S. Clemment (USA)
I purchased this stroller after lusting after it for months, and finally finding it on sale, $80 off. I also purchased this stroller after having acquired a used maxi cosi mico. However, I have to admit that just prior to purchasing this, I also had ordered a maclaren easy traveller and quest umbrella stroller. So I spent the night comparing these two very different options. Experience wise, this is my third child, so I know my own needs very well.

First, let's discuss using the maxi cosi mico car seat with the quinny zapp 4. It requires unzipping and unbuckling the zapp seat from the frame, which takes some time. Your baby would be too young to use the zapp 4 seat for at least the first six to nine months since it doesn't recline, so its not a big deal. Next, you have to insert the maxi cosi into the included adaptors. This is a challenge. There are slots under the handles of the maxi cosi that need to be placed over the adaptors, but it isn't easy to line it up, not at all. I could not imagine being able to get the car seat onto the stroller with the extra weight of an infant in it.

Now, let's discuss popping it back out. You have to put one hand on each side of the car seat, near the adaptor, and push in two buttons on each side at the same time, then lift the seat out while holding those buttons. This means that you won't be able to lift the seat out using the car seat carrying handle, which means that you really aren't able to stablize the seat properly. I could not imagine attempting this with my baby in the seat, no way.

Compare this to using the maclaren easy traveller. You can simply lift the car seat by its proper handle, set it down on the frame, and attach the safety strap. Your infant may be at a slight risk until you have the safety strap buckled which takes about two seconds. When you need to take the baby out, just unbuckle the strap and carry the seat out by its proper handle once again. Very easy, safe, nothing to line up. I could picture myself popping the seat in and out of the stroller frame with the infant in it, no problem.

Second, let's discuss the fold. Folding the quinny zapp 4 requires several actions. Step 1, push button number 1 on the side, near those car seat adaptors. Step 2, push button number 2 on the other side, Step 3, bend over the top half of the stroller frame forward, Step 4, bend down to the x-shaped area near the basket, pull grey lever down and out slightly, with your hand, then push x-shaped area in to fold the stroller. After all of that hard work, you have to then scrunch the stroller up and hope that it keeps its shape, then pick it up from somewhere and lift it into your trunk. What a challenge it is. First of all, it doesn't necessarily fold all that well, it gets stuck, and you have to bend over and spend alot of time at ground level just trying to push in that bottom x-shaped piece just to get it folded one time. Lifing the frame into the trunk isn't comfortable because there is no handle or obvious part to grab to pick it up. You need to use two hands to keep the frame from hitting your body or unfolding itself in case the shape doesn't hold. What a pain. The fold is compact and short, but still a rather bulky rectangular shape with the car seat adaptors poking out on top.

Compare the fold to that of the maclaren easy traveller. With the maclaren, Step 1, you press a lever on the side of the back with your foot to unlock it, Step 2, press another little lever up, with your foot, to get the folding mechanism ready to fold, Step 3, push the handle forward, all the way down to the ground, until the stroller lock grabs. You then pick it up by the handle, pop it in your trunk. It's very easy to fold. I'd call it a 3 second fold. Easily accomplished with one hand. No problems, no complications. It is even possible to fold this without bending over, if you are willing to use both arms. When folded the easy traveller is very flat, very compact, but much longer than the quinny. Overall, it takes up less real estate in the trunk, in my opinion.

Now, let's move on to the quinny zapp 4 with the seat installed. No recline, seat is attached with plastic zippers and velcro. Seat is made with a kind of scratchy material. Storage basket is tiny. Seat buckle must be assembled, like a puzzle, with two pieces going into the buckle at one time. Not that easy to buckle in your child. I asked my four year old to test out the seat, he fit into it, it looked comfortable. Nowhere to hang anything off the back, such as your car keys, drinks, snacks, etc. Not notice any available carry pack that would fit onto the thick frame.

Comparing it to the maclaren, there are a few things to note. Recline is of utmost importance. Kids love to nap in the stroller. The basket is also small in the maclaren, but can hold a diaper bag easily without anything falling out. The buckle doesn't require any pre-assembly, much easier to do with a child squirming in the seat. The fold of the quest stroller is the same as the easy traveller. Maclaren is compatible with an organizer to hang off the back, to fit your bottles, snacks, wipes, kleenex, and all of that other important stuff in that parents need to have handy, not stuck down in the basket below your sleeping child who is probably reclined over the basket blocking mom from getting into the diaper bag. Same organizer fits on both the easy traveller and quest.

Maneuverability wise, the quinny turns on a dime, but it gets stuck on anything on the floor, because it has parts that are low to the ground. With the maclarens, they also turn easily with one hand, but don't get hung up on little bumps and things, as the wheels are more conventional stroller type wheels.

Final results. The quinny zapp 4 can be used as both a stroller and a car seat frame carrier, so you'd save money on not having to buy both. With the maclaren option, as discussed here, you'd need to buy two separate pieces, the car seat carrier and then later, the stroller.

The non-quinny car seat frame works with several different car seats, the quinny only works with the expensive maxi cosi car seat.

I decided that I'd rather buy two separate pieces, car seat carrier frame, in my case the maclaren easy traveller, and then a stroller, in my case maclaren quest, than deal with the difficulty of folding the quinny zapp 4. *Even though I now own the maxi cosi mico car seat, I'm returning the quinny zapp 4, rather than the maclaren set of two, which cost twice as much.*

 "Great middle sized stroller" 2010-03-07
By Rachel Stevens (Yigo, Guam)
I would not call this an umbrella stroller, more like mid sized.

While we don't own the 4-wheeled one, we have the Zapp in 3 wheels which we purchased when we lived in Europe.

I wanted one for so long. We walked a lot on the bricks in Europe and we actually broke tires on our other strollers. I love the tries on this, like a rubbery material.

Yes this does not recline so it works better if your child is older. The seat belt straps drive me insane. At the tightest setting, our 21 month old can climb out because they are still huge. No way to adjust it smaller.

My daughter LOVES to sit in this.

It folds really small and is airline carry on sized, but we just checked it plane side.

The sun shade is detachable and you can buy different soft seats for them... at least the 3 wheeled Zapp you can (only in the UK).

It takes a while to get used to the folding/unfolding process- 1,2,3.

All in all it's a great stroller but it has a few minor flaws with the seat belt and it not reclining, this is a great buy.

"Pretty good but has some issues" 2010-02-21
By Rose (Connecticut)
Pros: I find that this stroller is very easy to push with one hand (which is great) as long as you are indoors (like at the mall.) We have received many compliments on it, it really looks so modern, which is a plus.

My daughter loves to ride in it- we used it with the Maxi Cosi car seat until she was about 9 months old. It folds up pretty small and doesn't take up a lot of space in the trunk.

Cons: Unfortunately, it tips backwards really easily which is dangerous. You really can't hang anything on the handles. The bag on the bottom is very hard to access and too small to really fit anything into it. I also wish it had some kind of tray or bar that goes across it, there is nowhere to hang a toy or put a snack. I tried purchasing a cup holder that was supposed to fit on any stroller, but- surprise! it didn't fit. The aluminum frame is more square than round so most stroller accessories are not compatible with it. Folding and opening can also be tough- the first time I ever used it my daughter was about 6 weeks old. I got her in the car, she was screaming, I was stressed, then I couldn't get the stroller to close. I had to throw the whole thing, fully opened, into the back seat of my Acura because it would not fold. Luckily I've gotten better at it but it still seems to "stick" sometimes when I try to collapse it.

I would purchase it again but I think the company still has some glitches to work through to make it better. I have a cheaper umbrella stroller that has never tipped over and even came with a cupholder- if that company can figure it out I don't see why this one can't!
