"I Would Not Let My Baby Sleep on the Nap Nanny" 2010-03-06
By Samantha Williams (Jemez Pueblo, NM USA)
We purchased the Nap Nanny after reading that it might help with infant reflux. Upon opening the package, we were instantly overwhelmed with a terrible chemical smell. We thought perhaps it would go away after airing it out for a few days. It did not. My son smelled like this chemical after laying on the Nap Nanny for just a short time.

I was very concerned, so I researched the issues of fire retardants (which the Nap Nanny is treated with, according to the manufacturer) and there are some very serious issues with this chemical and infants. I won't go into that here as there is plenty of information online about the concerns of these chemicals, Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE Flame Retardants). I contacted Nap Nanny directly to inquire about the smell and I was told that sometimes in the manufacturing process, more of the chemical gets concentrated in some areas as it is applied to the Nap Nanny. The company recommended that I order a replacement from Amazon and return the original as defective. I did and the new Nap Nanny arrived and had the very same smell. We aired it out again and the smell did not go away. We decided that there was no way we were going to let our son sleep on this thing that smelled so toxic.

Many children's items we own unfortunately contain these PBDE's including our bouncy seat and the cushion on our son's highchair. It is difficult to avoid this chemical as it seems to be in most baby gear. However, none of these other items we own exhibited such a strong smell as the Nap Nanny did, even when they were brand new.

We also returned the second Nap Nanny for a full refund from Amazon because it was unusable. The one good thing about the Nap Nanny is that it made me more aware of this chemical in baby products and now we are trying to avoid it whenever possible. Oh, and what did we do about the reflux which in my son's case was really just excessive spitting up when sleeping? We elevated the head of the bed by 6" with a few pieces of scrap 2x4's...this, a little bit of time and patience and the reflux problem went away. And the 2x4's were free.

 "Not for sleeping" 2010-02-17
By Alexa (Massachusetts)
My baby has reflux and will not sleep on her back. We thought this would be a great solution, but it has not worked for us. She doesn't like to be swaddled, but she also does not like to have too much wiggle room either. When she is in the nap nanny there is too much room around her-- I don't this she feels secure and wakes up within 10 minutes (even if I roll up blankets around her). I think this product would work better for bigger/older babies with more head control (mine is 2 months old, 24 inches/14 lbs). She does, however, love to hang out in the seat, so at least it wasn't a total waste of money. The one thing that has worked to get her to sleep on her back is the Fisher Price Newborn Rock and Play Sleeper. If your baby will only sleep in a swing or carseat, I suggest giving this product a try--it's only $50, it is an approved infant sleeping product, and it has worked like a charm for us.

"Dangerous as a sleep aide" 2010-02-17
By Russell Mitchell
It is disappointing for us to write this review, as in one respect this product works perfectly. Our daughter has acid reflux, to the point it is often difficult to lay her flat simply to change her diaper, let alone sleep. So after many sleepless nights, we bought the NN on the recommendation of a nearby retailer. Their having none in stock, we purchased via Amazon.

However, on the first night we awoke to find our 9 week old (12 lb) with arm and head completely over the side, bent forward at a dangerous angle to say the least. I had fastened the waist guard properly, but the sides are too low. So much for us sleeping through the night. Perhaps our daughter is a more active/restless sleeper than most - though I doubt this. Regardless, in the ensuing days I have twice watched her attempt to maneuver back into this position while sleeping - fortunately under supervison.

The product's materials aside, we will likely continue to use the NN after feeding and in addition to her other products (swing, etc.). However, we highly caution others to think twice before leaving a child in this device unsupervised. We will treat it the same way we do her swing.

Unfortunately, and given it's name, we bought this sleep aide as much as to provide rest for us as our child. In that respect, this product fails..

"Mom Gets to Sleep Because Grandma Found Nap Nanny..." 2010-02-12
By delicateflower152 (Texas)
My daughter's baby was over 9 pounds at birth - and, to top it off he suffered from reflux. After several weeks of having losing sleep, she took the doctor's recommendation to elevate her son while he was sleeping. She used his bouncy chair and the car seat, but was still not happy with the results. In other words, she still wasn't getting to sleep, and he still suffered from reflux. Over-the-counter and prescription medicines helped some, but not enough. I had seen this item while perusing her baby magazines and suggested she try it. However, as an independant adult, she thought there had to be other ways to solve the problem.

Ten weeks of very poor sleep proved to be her breaking point; she ordered the Nap Nanny just after Christmas. Within a day, her son was sleeping better and suffering the effects of reflux less. Thus, Mom was getting a better quality sleep and was much happier.

Her son is 17 pounds at four months old; he still both fits in and sleeps well in the Nap Nanny. He, too, is an active sleeper. However, he is still being swaddled during sleeping times and does not wiggle or roll out of the Nap Nanny. Additionally, the strap on the Nap Nanny provides additional assurance that the baby will not roll out of the Nap Nanny. I definitely recommend this product to parents whose baby has a problem with reflux. They should find it aids the baby and is a real help in allowing them to get some quality sleep.

 "Great product" 2010-02-04
By HM (Mountain View, CA)
Our baby was born 7 weeks early, and since coming home had difficulty sleeping flat due gas and reflux. We had been using a wedge sleep positioner, but this provided only about 2 inches of elevation, and the baby would still wake up in a couple hours uncomfortable or spitting up. Since using the nap nanny he can sleep for 5 hours at a time (and likely longer as I wake him up to feed) and even more amazing we can put him in awake and he will go to sleep on his own (there was no prayer of that happening before).

As mentioned by other reviewers, the product did have a strong smell out of the box-but after a day of airing out there is no lingering odor. We use ours with the snuzzler head support to keep his head positioned-which works perfectly; the body support seemed to crowd him too much. Our baby will only sleep in the bed with us, and I feel much safer with him in the nap nanny between us as there is no chance he can slide under our blankets. Other than the steep price I think its a great product-and for us the added sleep makes it well worth it.
